I'm not overweight and don't have any of the normal risk factors for sleep apnea, but when I began to wonder if I was sleeping well, I signed up for a sleep study and bingo! Sleep apnea is my problem. I believe it started when I injured my lumbar disks many years ago, and although a side sleeper all my life, was advised to train myself to sleep on my back with pillows under me. When I began doing this, at first I used to wake myself up every so often with a little "snort." I didn't know at the time that this was a sign of apnea - my throat closing up. And I guess I got used to it so it didn't wake me up any more after a while, but it was happening just the same, as the sleep study proved. My doctors recommended a CPAP machine, but when discussing it with them, I asked about the one hour during the study when I had slept on my side, during which there were no apnea events. Apparently it's very rare for sleep apnea to occur during side sleeping. Could I try sleeping on my side to see if that cures my apnea, I asked. Yes, "positional therapy" was an option, they told me in doctor-speak, LOL. So I've been using this "bumper belt" for a couple of weeks now to make sure I do sleep on my side. I quickly became used to it. I really like the feeling of security when I go to bed that I won't sleep on my back. If you want to sleep on your side, I highly recommend this product because it's comfortable, well-designed and probably a heck of a lot more pleasant than a CPAP machine. I have to go back for another sleep study and I'll wear this when I'm "studied" to see if it has helped the apnea - will report back then.
